Image via WikipediaWith all the talk of hoodies and violence and the soccer season round the corner, it was wonderful to sit at the bridge near Keyhaven and watch three generations of families crabbing. It is a simple sport which gives so much excitement to kids and hopefully a harmless thrill to the crabs. Pieces of bacon are put in the soap bags used in washing machines. Tie on a long line and drop it over the side of the bridge. Soon a crab will grab hold so pull the line very carefully. Then you need a Mum or Dad (the grandparents are sitting watching thinking of times long past) with a net with an extra long pole. If you have the standard pole, the clever crab will think I have had enough of this and drop back to the water before reaching the net. The longer pole lets you gently put the net under the crab and drop it carefully in the bucket.
Then Mum or Dad decides the crabs want to play again so back they go in the water. Hours and hours of fantastic fun and lots and lots of happy memories!
But some wrinklies or snow birds were not so lucky and were not with their families but had arrived by coach. Slowly off they got and the driver opened the luggage doors to reveal rows of electric scooters. Down they all came and rushed off the the first stop – the comfort stations! Electric scooters have transformed the lives of the old and less mobile. But you need the 8mph scooter to cope with the gravel and the uneven roads.
