Gigs, sport and shopping

His website raysgigs.com has had over 145,000 hits and there is lots of feedback at the BBC site on the article.

It is not my cup of tea but I guess it is better than watching the same rugby or football team each week.  The difference being that the people in the band stay the same, most of the time, whilst with sport we are watching a brand.

Ray’s site has masses of detail and is difficult for people with old eyes to read.  Most of the people leavings comments on the BBC site are male.  I guess it must be tribal!  They all appreciate social network sites for keeping them up to date on the latest trends and gigs.

But soon we will be seeing one of the wonderful sights of the year – happy female shoppers with all the lovely bags and the biggest and brightest smiles anywhere.  Much bigger than at any sports match of gig and they are gently glowing!  You need to read Ray’s blog to understand the joy of still jumping down at the front of the stage and getting very hot and excited.

I wonder if there is much difference between the business plan resource used by people who promote gigs and sports matches?

Bill Gates : How a geek changed the world; but what about The Cloud?

Bill GatesImage by bsktcase via FlickrWatched the Fiona Bruce led Money Programme on Gill Gates three times and want to watch it again before it expires on from my BBC iPlayer.  It is great to be reminded of all the opportunities we all let pass by and Bill grabbed with both hands.  In the early 80s, I remember seeing e-mail and hypertext for the same time – all we needed was a little bit of software to build a business but who thought that a browser or a URL would ever have any value?

Fiona Bruce makes the comment that on meeting Bill Gates, you get no sign of great wealth, great power or a strong personality but in the end you feel how his personality pervades Microsoft with his relentless determination to win.  The successful entrepreneurs in Cambridge are similar, well most of them.  The only UK entrepreneur to feature on the programme is Sir Alan Sugar– what does that say about the geek world of the UK?

So much to find interesting but how did Bill Gates pick up on an internal memo that college kids in America where incorporating the web into their daily lives from e-mails to ordering pizzas.  The Internet was not just for the geek students.  He wrote the famous memo The Internet Tidal Wave and tens of thousands of Microsoft employees changed step.  Is that leadership?

Now The Cloud looms all around us with everything on line.

Twitter gets serious

For those people still not sure of the value of Twitter and blogging, I suggest that they read this BBC article. Twitter was the first to spread the news of the quake and is now being used to help people support each other through this dreadful time.

Can you pick an entrepreneur, blogger or footballer?

Robin Preston is the BBC’s business editor and his blog, Preston’s Picks, has a million readers.  Would you pick him to be a great broadcaster and writer?  Well, he comes from an intellectual hot-house (father Lord Preston, economic guru of Queen Mary College, London and mother works in the NHS) so you could take a good guess.  What about Pele?  His father was, take a guess, a centre forward and the family football crazy.  Early research at CMI shows the one of the best indicators of a successful entrepreneur is if the father was an entrepreneur.

I wonder about Jerome Kerviel of   Societe Generale who has just lost the bank £3.7bn?  More importantly perhaps, what will his children do?

I guess it is all about nurture and nature.  I remember a bank manager saying that you can tell if a person is an entrepreneur when you shake their hand.  I offered a wager if he could pick out the successful entrepreneurs in the room but he was not keen to take me on.
