Alison Kervin writes in the Telegraph sport section on 27 August 2008 about how “retirement can be shattering blow for stars hooked on the emotional elite of sport” and you can add business. Founding and building a business is such a high for the entrpreneurs. Kervin quotes the great Rugby League star Martin Offiah saying as being like “an intense pain”.
UK Sport has Phil Gallagher charged with “re-socialising” athletes into society and invites officers from the MOD Directorate of Resettlement to talk about how the army helps people move back into civilian life. “Athletes (and entrepreneurs?) go through sadness, anger, denial and then, finally, acceptance. Many get stuck on one of those stages , so they’re in denial and hang around the new players and, in the end, they just begin to look very sad.”
Perhaps this could be added to the job description of David Gill, new director the St John’s Innovation Centre.
