Great news that Jonathan Milner, founder of Abcam, has chipped in £50,000 in the latest round raised by Horizon Discovery. This was led by Cambridge Enterprise. Milner led the founding round of Cambridge Temperature Concepts so let us hope he will follow the lead of Reid “glug” Hoffman of LinkedIn and soon have over 60 investments. The Cambridge Cluster needs the boost. Abcam has a great Equity Fingerprint, the business plan resource, so will the magic rub off on his investments?
Horizon Discovery seems to be in hock to Execute Technologies, a company which invests and provides services to life science companies.
Cambridge Temperature Control and Horizon Discovery have very different Equity Fingerprints at this early stage of their growth. How will this affect the end game? Milner is believed not to be a fan of VCs which worked out well with Abcam but is it always the best way to go? Milner floated Abcam but should he have gone for a partial realisation of his holding and further funds and expertise from VCs? Now he has a lot of passive equity to drag along whilst he builds a global business and his portfolio. It would appear that Cambridge Enterprise are of the same mind-set so we can expect a quick trade sale.
