Under the title “The Founder’s dilemma”, Noam Wasserman, a professor in the Entrepreneurial Management unit at Harvard Business School, publishes some great research on how a founder or king agrees to dilution to build the business. It is good stuff. But in clusters such as Silicon Valley, Boston and Cambridge, the apostrophe matters. Cluster start-ups have teams and have multi-founders/investors in multi rounds. So if you are a King check out this great research; Founders will have to wait until the Equity Fingerprint NESTA project, headed by Dr Frank Cave, reports back this Fall. From a micro analysis will it produce macro policies?
If you go for investors, chose ones that add much more than money – search clusters for the right VCs. Be like eBay; bank the cash and get the VCs building the business. Make them sweat for their equity!
