Image via WikipediaTowards the end of Christmas Day, I realised that the oldest person in the room was rather left out. Kay is a special person who has watched her daughter die of cancer and lost one of her late daughter’s children in a hit and run accident.
I crossed the room to sit next to her and learnt that she was not from Cornwall but from Barnsley in Yorkshire and the child of an Irish couple who had come to Yorkshire to seek work. Kay had worked in the Singer Sewing Machine factory and met the love of her life, her late husband.
Then she talked and said how she loved to sing. I asked her who she enjoyed and she mentioned John McCormick, the Irish tenor. Interestingly he had also been a favourite of my Father-in-law. Would he be on YouTube?
So late on Christmas Day, very late, I watched a lovely smile come over Kay’s face, her cares forgotten, as she sung along to her favourite singers and thought of times long ago.
It was wonderful to see her use the iPhone and iTouch helped by the wonders of Wi-Fi – so good to see technology used to bring happiness and then so sad to learn about the events in the Middle East.
