The bakery in St Agnes has changed ownership and although no local will admit to a bought Cornish pastie being the real deal, the pasties from St Agnes are good enough for me. I knew things had changed as when I drove past the Aggie, (St Agnes Hotel) I saw around ten people munching (is that the correct term?) on pasties. Two down and I hope to manage a couple more on my short stay in St Agnes, Cornwall.
I am staying with the owners of L Doble & Sons, suppliers of frozen and other foods to the catering trade in Cornwall and beyond. So many people in St Agnes work for the public sector and it is good to be with an entrepreneur. Our public sector breatheren seem to be obsessed with working four “long days” and being paid for five or else being given salary guarantees at a higher level when their department is restructured and they are demoted. Great “work” if you can get it.
But will my visit to Cornwall and Hell Fire Corner at Redruth Rugby Club bring good luck and a win for Cambridge Rugby Club? The match starts at 2.30pm instead of the 2.00pm in Cambridge as Redruth is 5 degrees west and half an hour behind Cambridge which is ten miles or so from the Greenwich Meridian. Let us hope Cambridge stays ahead of the pace in the game!
