Another new company in the Cornish Cluster is Western Greyhound. The story goes that it was started by two people with considerable experience of the transport sector who did well when the bus monopoly was broken up. Looking for a new challenge, they bought a Newquay bus depot and offered a coach service to the “up country” coach companies who would bring people down for one week holidays. People wanted different holidays and came for shorter holidays and stayed with the original coach.
Looking for a new market, they went back to the business they knew, running a scheduled bus service. Run a punctual service and people use your buses and so the business has expanded. It is a cash business and most drivers are wonderful but you have to keep an eye out for the odd bad egg. Keep changing the routes for the drivers and watch the takings is one way of keeping control of the business. But most of all have helpful drivers who deliver a punctual bus service and the punters will use the service.
As always, it is the customers, stupid! to coin a phrase and no conductor is needed on the buses but you need one at the top.
