Image via WikipediaDr Mark Owen is enjoying being a `captain of industry’ as he develops his new company Quixate with the strap line – sufficiently advanced technology. The website says that “Quixate develops technologies to read the text in natural photographic images. This makes it easy to index and search collections of photographs”.
The website has lots of information on the technology but little on customers but they may still be in stealth mode.
However the great Scoblizier is up and about as always and has a post on new apps for the iPhone. His most useful app on his new 3G iPhone (I am jealous) is Evernote which ” turned all the text in the picture into something you could search for. This is the coolest thing”.
Perhaps Quixate has competition and with problems getting apps approved by Apple, it looks like Evernote has first mover advantage with over 30,000 people signed up from the Apple store.
Also the speed of first mover has moved up so much as the Scobleizer comments: “To give you some perspective on how much the world has sped up: in 1996 the hottest app was ICQ, an instant messaging client. The guys who started that company defined viral marketing. In the first six weeks that ICQ was out there they had 65,000 downloads. Tapulous saw that many downloads in less than a day”.
So if the Cambridge Cluster wants to be in the social software and apps place, then we need to go up a few gears. Perhaps it is best to stick to our knitting and concentrate on Active Equity Companies and technology from Cambridge University.
