Talking about recycling I am listening to Paul McCartney playing in Liverpool. Who would have thought of the Internet when he started out at The Cavern. Cambridge has a recycling system of large black bin for house refuse, large green bin for organic material such as grass cuttings and two small bins; one for newspaper and bottles and the other for plastic. It all seems sensible except that 60% of the household rubbish is organic and should be in the green bin. It is important to sort out the plastic carefully and yogurt pots are not wanted in the plastic box because they are made of the wrong kind of plastic. Plastic milk bottles are made of two different plastics – one for the top and another for the bottle. So unscrew the top, wash out the bottle and place both in the box.
Donarbon are building a new recycling plant in a £40million PFI investment. The first operation will be splitting open all the plastic bags which we put inside the large black bags which are thrown in the bin. The rubbish is shaken to separate the organic material as the first stage.
The key to recycling is for the consumers to separate rubbish carefully at the kerbside. Instead of threats from local councils we need education and encouragement as when we all work together, recycling will make a difference and the products easy to use again. Every sorted scrap helps!
